Javier Mariscal is a Spanish graphic and furniture designer. Although he began working as an artist, since 1979 Mariscal has been designing furniture that has been awarded and exhibited in various exhibitions and fairs and runs his Estudio Mariscal in Barcelona since 1989. His work is always complex in intention but manifested in a simple manner and this is quite obvious in his designs, with cartoon characters being a huge source of inspiration in all the mediums he uses. Mariscal has teamed up with various manufacturing design companies that produced pieces that have already become classic. His collaboration with Italian Magis brought up many design objects for kids. Villa Julia is one of them, a cardboard playhouse for kids which they can set it up by themselves and make it their own by coloring the drawings found on the sides.
Interested in the emotional relationship that must be established between a furniture object and a child, Mariscal also designed Ladrillos bookshelf for kids, made of moulded plastic and laminated wooden shelves
Chest and Nest is another piece Mariscal designed for the kids’ collection for Magis. Chest and Nest is consisted of two multifunctional elements that can work both as storage pieces and toys for children!
But don’t children also need some stackable furniture? Alma chairs and Linus table made in polyurethane and polypropylene plastic work great in schools, play schools and kids’ rooms!
Working with similar materials and inspired by comics, Mariscal created Piedras sofa, armchair and table which are made of plastic but resemble to stones with both their volumetric forms and texture.
For the Reiet chair and table, the Spanish designer used wood.
Last but not least, Julian is a seat for children that Mariscal created, turning a Los Carriris cartoon character into furniture! Wouldn’t you also use it as a stool in your dining room?
